I will never forget a story my mother told me, about back in the day when she was in her 20's. There was a woman on her job that was always dressed to the 9's, from the top down to her shoes. And my mother looked at her and thought, " Man she has it together, I would love to have clothes like that." But at that point in her life she couldn't afford it! This same woman my Mother "admired" for her outward appearance tells my mother, "What kind of car is that you have? I would never get that kind of car." Fast forward a few weeks later, that same woman needed a ride home. My Mom thought, "Oh, that's funny you want a ride? In my old Cutlass? how funny.." But my mother gave her a ride to her apartment not her house but her apartment. This was eye opening for my mother! Yes this woman has nice clothes, but she doesn't have a car and she doesn't own her own home! Now, this isn't meant to down anyone that doesn't own a car or a home. It is just meant to show you that people have different priorities. For my Mother the priority was making sure she could get her and her children from point A to point B without relying on someone else or using Baltimore's very limited public transportation. And the other priority was having a nice home for her and her children, that belonged to her that no one could "take away".
Moral of the story is, She could have easily broken her back trying to keep up with this woman and her wardrobe. But, after seeing the things this woman was lacking in order to dress in the latest was not appealing. Many, of us need to spend more time focusing on the things that really matters. And spending money on things we actually need and can afford. I am a shoe lover and would love to own a pair of Louboutins or Giuseppes but, I realize it will get me no where closer to where I really want to be. I'll keep stretching these dollars and maybe one day I'll have a pair or two. But, for know I'll be fly in my Steve Madden shoes that I caught on clearance and got a rebate through Ebates to buy.
So what I am trying to tell you is STOP doing what a lot of us do today, spending money we don't have, using credit allll wrong trying to impress people who need a ride in our car!
